Guys...
Weigh up this:
1) Spend a lot of money. Spend a lot of time:
First, spend much time learning 'stuff'.
Get a pressurized CO2 system.
Learn how to measure CO2.
Install good lights suitable for plant growth so that you get at least 2W per US Gallon (<- a very rough guide).
Buy lots of ferts.
Spend quite a lot of time on maintenance (fert dosing, pruning, 50% weekly water changing).
You can get away with a simple substrate...
Result: Mind blowingly Stupendous plant growth. Grow any aquatic plant.
2) Spend a lot but not as much money.
First, spend much time learning 'stuff'.
Get a DIY CO2 yeast kit (2off staggered really required with these things).
Learn how to measure CO2 and how to keep it sodding stable.
Install good lights suitable for plant growth so that you get at least >2W per US Gallon (<- a very rough guide).
Buy lots of ferts.
Spend quite a lot of time on maintenance (fert dosing, pruning, 50% weekly water changing).
You can get away with a simple substrate...
Result: Great plant growth. Grow any aquatic plant.
3) Be a lazy cheapo git. Just like me.
First, spend some time learning 'stuff'.
Don't bother with CO2. Too damn expensive and a pain in the ar....
Install good lights suitable for plant growth so that you get at least 1.5 to 2W per US Gallon BUT NO MORE (<- a very rough guide).
Buy lots of ferts but use only 1/10 to a 1/3 of the above amounts.
Spend no time on maintenance. No time water changing. Once a week spend 2 mins dropping a small amount of ferts into the tank.
Keep your fish well fed.
Bit more effort required on the substrate front.
Result: Slow plant growth. However can still grow virtually any aquatic plant. Spend time wasted on maintenace enjoying fish / plants.
4) Don't bother with bloody plants as they are far, far more difficult to 'do' than keeping fish!
