Hi All.
I have had my 180 litre tank set up for three weeks and everything is going well,
My question is I have got a fitted top with the light unit in and I have put a couple of
panes of glass between the top of the tank and the hood to protect the light from
condensation, now do I really need to have the glass there as it is such a pain when
I need access to the tank having to take the top off to remove the glass, would it
be okay just to have the lid.

kind regards.

tony.

Yes you do need to have it there as condensation + electrical lights do not mix.

Depends, as some modles of tank have a water-proofed end cap to protect against water getting into the tubes. Juwel are one example.

What tank do you have?

All the best

It is preferable to have something between the water and the light unit.
If you are having problems getting the covers off to feed the fish you can get the coverglass cut in half so one pice goes across the back half of the tank, and the other piece goes across the front half. They don't even have to be even sizes. You can do a 60/40 split cover where the smaller piece of glass is at the front and the bigge rbit at the back. You can then lift the front piece up to feed the fish without having to remove the hood.
You can also have a hole drilled in the glass to drop food in. Or have a triangular piece cut out and fitted with a small handle so you can lift it off and feed the fish from there.

Hi All.
Thanks for the replys I will take the advice and leave the glass and do a bit
DIY to make access easier. :good: It is a ehiem setup by the way.

regards Tony.

Glass covers also help w/evaporation. I have only 2 lil strips of glass that are big enough for my lights to sit on and thats it. I have to add 3 gallons a day due to evaporation! That's around 85-90 gallons per month! I'll be getting glass lids as soon as my LFS gets them in!
