I've seen a guy who placed a cliff in his tank. It was interesting, but like you said, it was a mound of gravel really. I can't find the pic of it again but I can try to explaining it. He basically created a rock wall out of slate that sloped back a little (to hold pressure from fill behind it) and filled in the gravel behind it to keep pressure as it rose. I think it was in a 75G Planted Community tank. He may have covered the top of the gravel with some nutrient fill and then sand for the plants, but I don't remember. Anyways...the wall was about 6" high and made quite a focus point in his tank and really made it look different.

Just an idea....if you don't want to use natural stone and mounds of gravel, try using foam covered with cement. You can get a very natural look and really design a bottom anyway you wish, creating little pop ups and drops wherever you want. Check out this post of a guy who made a foam background for his tank. I assume the same thing can be done for a piece to lay flat on the bottom of your tank. Goodluck!

EDIT: Just spelling
