38 US gallon tank with odessa barbs, rosy barbs, von trio tetras, platys, and 3 B. kubotai loaches. Almost every fish is acting sick, and I have no clue what is wrong with them.

There is absolutely nothing visiably wrong with these fish. I noticed the platys started to clamp their fins a bit...some hang at the surface, some at the bottom. Everyone was still eating.

I bought a 305 Fluval filter, used media established from my boss' cichlid tank (the carbon was new), and set it up. Everyone started acting weird as soon as I added it. I had been floating the wheel from my bio wheel in the water, but I just removed it. Yesterday when fish were acting odd I thought they were just stressed from the addition of the new (noisier) filter. But now, I am not so sure.

I've been testing parameters since Sunday when I set everything up and my ammonia and nitrite are still 0, nitrate 20ppm. pH 8.0 (always is). I did water changes on the 9th, 12th (when I added the barbs), and the 17th. We're doing a large water change now as I type (50%). I've been paying special attention because I realize that I recently added fish and a new filter, and that even with the established media I was changing a spike. Oh, and no chlorine or chloramine either (my city says they dont add it but I test anyway and it is always none detectable). Maybe it was too much change at once, but I just don't understand why adding a new filter would cause such chaos. I rinsed everything new really well (except the established bio filtration that I took from the established tank). The cichlids in the tank that I got my media from are fine as always.

I just lost an Odessa Barb tonight - he was eating fine at noon, and now at 10pm I found him dead and his insides eaten. Now ALL of my fish are acting weird...my loaches are lethargic and breathing very rapidly with their mouths open...and at times taking BIG gulps.

I have a bubble wall, and since the bubbles regularly enter the filter, the filter makes gurguling noises and then sprays more bubbles...there's got to be plenty of oxygen in there. The temperature is 81 degrees F, and varies as much as 0.9 degrees in a 24 hour period.

I have melafix and pimafix on hand, as well as some amox that might still be good. But, I just have no idea what is going on with them.

PH is a little high for a community tank for mine better for a tank PH of neutral ( 7.0-7.5 I believe).
What is the colour of there waste? ( White and stringing, brown etc...)

I'm guessing with a pH of 8.0 your source of water is from a well. It's hard to believe they don't add any chlorine or chloramine, but it may be the case if you are in a very small town.

Wells are known to have traces of heavy metals from time to time. This may be the case. Try treating the water with Prime or Aquasafe, two water treatments that not only dechlor, but chelate heavy metals. If you don't have any chlorine or chloramine the dechlor components won't hurt your fish.

I have city water. My city does not add chlorine or chloramine. I know, I know, but trust me, it's the truth. I have tested it repeadedly. We live in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by farms. I've had the same fish in the same hard, alkaline water for over a year - that's just the way it is here. Heck, we have at least 10ppm nitrate in our water too, from the farms. The water is what it is. Some of these fish were bred in water just as alkaline.

Poop is all colors - white, brown, pink - basically, the colors of their flake foods. I have actually never seen my loaches poop, but I assume it is the same. I've had big guy for almost 2 years now.

An aquaintance suggested fish aggression as the cause of the stress. It's just so odd to have them act this way.

Update this morning.

Except for my (favourite) platy, everyone was swimming this morning, and everyone did have breakfast. My one loach didn't really go after the bloodworms as I expected, so I'm hoping he got something. The one platy that I have in the breeder net is still sitting at the bottom. She almost looked like she was going to eat a bloodworm, but decided she couldn't. Still no visible signs of anything wrong.

::sigh::
