Hi all,

I'm new to the fishkeeping 'business' and was looking for some help on a few problems.

A few months back I saw one of the Fluval tanks I liked the look of so I decided to do some research on the internet. However, a lot of the information is contradictory and there are a lot of differing opinions so I though the best thing to do would be to go to my lfs and speak to them (it's a very well known/respected one) I got the tank and they advised me on cycling, stocking etc. It's a 29L tank and I was told that 5 barbs would be fine in there and a couple of oto's. All of the fish are still alive, but now they are starting to look like a bigger tank would be better so I'm thinking of getting a 60L (it's the biggest I can have). Would they be ok in there or would it be better to sell them and start from fresh?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

I'm guessing it's a Fluval Edge? I think they're far too small for most fish species as they don't have enough room for fast fish to dart around and act naturally. It would help if you said what species of barb you have as some can get very big and some can be small (although I doubt your LFS would something small knowing it can become big). With more information like this I'm sure we can help you more.

It is yes. I've got 2 5 banded barbs, 2 Ruby and 1 Green Tiger. THey said it would be ok to mix them. Would a 60L be ok for these?

Thanks for your help :good:

I'm sure they'd all be fine in a 60L. I would definately recommend this as with more space you get to see the fish act more naturally. I'm not an expert on barbs but the Tiger barb may nip the others although if they're getting on fine now I'm sure they'll be OK. I'd maybe bulk out the barb numbers a bit - minimum of 3 of each species.

Good Luck,

i would consider ditching the 2 ruby then make sure you have 6 pentas and 6 green tigers, although if you wanted some variety, you could have 2 greens, two gold/albino and 2 standard tigers if you wanted. they all school together nicely. I have 18 normal tigers in a 90 litre, it makes for a really nice looking tank and so far i wouldnt consider it over stocked. So 12 in a 60 would be ok, volume wise anyway.
