Well, it seems my 15 year old brother unpluged my main 55gal tank last night at 1am to listen to music   . The whole tank runs off a extension cord, so when he unpluged it turned off everything filter, heater, lights, air pump, timer. So its all a big mess right now. It was turned back on at roughly 11:20 this morning, which is when i came down to feed the fishes, but ended up yelling at my brother. The temp when I turned it on was 73 degreese right now its climbed up to 75. But my main concern is if the filter crashed or not(the filter is a rena XP3). I'm guessing it did, so could someone tell me how soon i will be seeing ammonia readings? Also just to let everyone know i've always cloned tanks so i have no experience when it comes to cycling(so i'm very nervous right now). Also my brother will be paying for any fish that die, medications i have to get, and if i have to order anything. At the moment i have no idea on what to do.

Any help would be greatly appricated

As long as there's water in the filter while it was off, it's okay. The danger would be if the bacteria was exposed to air and unsubmerged.

Let temp creep up on its own don't add water to raise it.
How are the fish?
Get water tested fast if you don't have test kits, tell lfs to write the readings down for you.
Look out for swimbladder, whitespot and columnaris.

Withhold feeding as well. This will lessen any ammo or nitrite spike. If the fish are stressed they will eat less, rotting food adds to the bio load, something you don't want now. Fish produce less ammonia when unfed, healthy adults can easily go for a week without eating.

Thanks for the replies :)
i tested my water and for the moment everything seems OK
Ammonia-0ppm
ph-7.2
nitrite-0ppm
nitrate-30ppm
the temp has crept back up to normal and the fish seem to be acting normal as well.

I figured it would be bad to feed them so they didn't get fed this morning and i'll start them on a fast.

Glad everything is ok.

keep an eye on those tank speccs though. water left in a filter for more than 4 hours can go stagnant and become toxic. This happens more in external filters so probably nothing to worry about. Still, keep an eye on the situation.
