after seeing some nice pics on here i have decided to redo my tank but id like to use a fair few plants etc does anyone have any tips on how many plants i should use and placement of them etc any other hints or advice is apprciated :)

ps im going to lfs tomorow for stuff

Have a look here
http://www,plantgeek.com
It should give you some ideas as to plant requirements and ease of keeping
Personally if I was starting Id get some of the easy stuff
Vallis /crypts and anubias
You can also go for java moss or java fern which you attach to bogwood/rock until the roots take hold.Nearly impossible to kill.
The above site gives a choice of foreground/midground/background or floating.
Id advise you to plant gradually and not buy a heap of different plants at once. There is no point in buying a plant which likes soft water if you have veryhard water.Theres also no point in buying plants which require very bright light if yours is low.
This is very general info and if you look in the planted section you should pick up more detailed information
Good luck

thanks for the link and advice as i would have bought a whole load plants tomorow lol now ill build it up gradually cheers ;)

What I find is that although most lfs know a lot about fish they seem to know very little about plants. They get them in and sell them off quickly and dont really know if the local water etc is suitable or not for the plants or what kind of care is needed.
Just dont want you to buy plants that are unsuitable for your set up.Ive had a few"that looks nice" moments and the plant has died off due to me not having the proper conditions. Now I prefer to get the plant and see how it does.If it goes well then I will buy some more.
In some lfs the plants will have a little description stuck in the pot telling you about size/light requirements/ph range/temp range and how easy it is to grow(and its name!).If they have these it makes life a lot easier :)

Just realised that the link I gave you should have been plantgeek.net and not .com.Sorry

If you are going for real plants - add something like Laterite granuals to your substrate...
