he he apparently it's not that unfeasible to do by boat nowadays, my big sis won't fly for ethical reasons (depletion of the planets natural resources etc etc) she's said she'd be prepared to come over by boat for a stay. obviously not something you can do all the time as it takes a while, but for a big occasion like if we got married over there or something then she'd come over.

Well let me say Welcome to Canada
Which part of the country are you aiming for? I live in Laval, just north of montreal, and bought a 3 bedroom house for less then 180,000. I'm moving in in 2 weeks!!!

as far as tanks go, they are much more expensive here then in the states. Everything cost about twice as much. Same goes for computers.

Now what I'm wondering is if the 5500$ covers the whole setup, tank, stand, light, filters, heaters, gravel, decorations.... if it does, then that's a decent price. I'm sure you can find it cheaper by shopping around but there's no way you can order that online in Canada unfortunetaly. Custom tanks are very expensive as the hobby is not very popular over here :(

I bought a 90 gallon setup and it cost almost 1500$ everything included.

I'm sure if you stick with a more standard size, like 225 gallon (6x2x2) tank, it would be much much cheaper.

funnily enough, my hubby and I were wondering the other night whether you can actually still go to America or Canada by boat in this age of high speed planes. I would love to be rich enough to go over that way and not worry about how long it takes. One day, when I win the lottery. sjgh! Anyway wish you both all the best if you do decide to go for it, (I would at your age) and we would all love to hear about your travels and life on the other side!

Oops sorry for hi jacking this thread about large tank prices.

yup you can, and if you listen to everything my sister say's in 50 years we'll have no choice as we'll have no oil left, that's a whole other discussion and i've hijacked enough today though!

the time wouldn't be such a problem for her she lives and works on a self sustaining farming community so taking a holiday for a good couple of months wouldn't be a problem really. obviously if you've a regular job it's a different story.

but thankyou anyway it'll probably be a few years yet before we if we do decide to, but i'll be sure to keep you lot updated. :good:

oh and yes, sorry for the massive hijack i am a naughty wiggle

yeah I don't think things are any more expensive than the states it is just that the currency is different, thus is seems like you are paying out more money. I figured maybe 1000-1500 for the 300gallon so that why I posted.... and also, it was not from Canada, it was from the states...

now to hijack my own post....., ;)

has because glass and acrylic are so darn expensive, when dealing with large thick sheets, has anyone ever thought of having a really large tank built using a frame of something else and one pane of glass in the front...?

I saw some pictures of one built into the foundation with cement.... I believe it was 3000galons....? pretty neat... he had it all cement and 2 panes of glass in the front....

Flying is fine, it's crashing that bothers me.

I saw one that was made out of wood and painted with swimming pool paint. It had a full glass front and windows in the sides. It had a hinged top, and was absolutely beautiful. I would absolutely do that if I were that handy, which I am not.
