Folks,

For those who "gotta collect 'em all" when it comes to pufferfish, a cool sighting at the Wembley branch of Maidenhead Aquatics. They have a "takifugu" puffer for sale, 85 quid if I recall correctly, in the freshwater section. It's a big fish, about 20 cm long. Grey, with a single black eye-spot on the flanks. Not all that beautiful, but seemingly very active and healthy.

Anyway, whatever they think it is, it certainly isn't the standard issue takifugu puffer. Looks to me a lot like Takifugu rubripes, a marine/brackish species. I don't know very much about this species except that it is a lab animal, I think it has been bred in captivity, and presumably is easier to keem than the orange-spot takifugu.

If you're in the neighbourhood, definitely worth a quick look.

Cheers,

Neale
