Nice tanks, but he is a bit of a perfectionist. From what I've heard from people who met him, he is a nice guy, but has a bit of an ego. On the other hand, who wouldn't have an ego if they weren't practically worshipped by some?
Yeah, Amano's aquascapes are quite a site. You know it's funny that you said "landscapes" becuase his philosophy, as far as I know, is focused around nature you'll find above water and replicating it underwater in the aquarium, (so in a sense they are landscapes, sort of ) Just imagine a school of giant 50ft angelfish flying in the air outside your window... It may sound easy, but it really takes some guile to get your tanks to look like that.
I did notice that Amano tanks look like above water landscapes, I think subconsciously that's why I said landscapes instead of aquascapes.
I think the perfectionist / ego traits are pretty standard fare for being an artistic genius. You know he makes great tanks, he knows he makes great tanks, and he knows that you know he makes great tanks.
Just imagine a school of giant 50ft angelfish flying in the air outside your window.
I personally prefer Dutch aquariums, but Amano does have a certain spartan aesthetic that I enjoy. I would never want to try to replicate it though. Amano's tanks require a LOT of work to get them to look the way they do and are generally unstable. They only look like they do in their picture for a day or two without continued major maintenance.
