My Comet Goldfish has a really big tail fin and I just noticed that the top of his tail fin is starting to turn a little redish and it looks like it is slowly being eaten away. Do you think that this could be the beginning of Fin and Tail Rot? Also what do you know about Ammonia Burn; could that be it?

Note: pictures will come

Sounds exactly like fin rot to me, especially the redness around the fin, but a picture would probably tell more. I don't know anything about ammonia burn... but do you have a testing kit. If the ammonia in your tank is anything higher than 0 ppm the fish are easily stressed and succeptible to a whole slew of diseases.

Here is a picture below, this is the best one. This shows the redness on the tail and also how it looks like the tail is being bitten apart.

What are your water stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph.
Red streaking in the tail is septicemia.
Need to get going with a bacterial med fast.
Good luck.

Ammonia was high, but I have done 2 water changes within the last 2 days here and it now says the ammonia is normal. However there will be a close eye kept on that and also so that the nitrate does not spike. I believe the bio filtration didn't set right. Everything was fine, now this has suddenly happened.

I'm gonna be using the Ammo-Lock like I had planned tonight and also keep up water changes. It is a 55 gallon tank with 3 goldfish. A fancy & comet and a common. All who leave the fancy alone! The common likes to go after the comet a bit b/c he is also a male. Their also in breeding at the moment and I think that isn't helping the comet out because he is stressed so as it is and now being chased once in a while doesn't help.

I believe I might be isolating the comet goldfish tonight, so he can relax and so he can get better.

What filter are you using as they are massive waste producers, and when I had goldifsh I had two filters running.

Emperor 400...It's doing a great job, there is no mess at all. I've even swooshed up the stones some and no dirt comes out.

What are your water stats as if you have ammonia or nitrite reading have to look into what causing it.

Here are my current stats at this moment! Thank you so much for helping!

Ammonia states as being 0ppm at this time still.

Nitrite is reading as 0.25

How high is your nitrate.
That what causing the red steaking in the tail the nitrite reading.
How often do you do a gravel vac.

Well their goldfish so they pick up the stones a lot pretty well. At least once a week or even some more I go through the stones.

Just completed the Nitrate test and it says 0. It's pure yellow color.
