One of my black mollies all of a sudden this morning, 90 % of her tailfin was gone! There doesn't LOOK like there's anything wrong, like damaged tissue or anything... so ####? She has seemed fine, she doesn't have aggressive tank mates... What happened to her tail? And can she recover from this or is she a lost cause? Is the rest of that tank at risk?

Thanks a lot for the help. What is the point of having an emergency forum when no one responds!! This happened the last time I posted in here as well. I think I might go find another fish forum.
Thanks SO much!

is it possible she could of got stuck in the filter intake and as a result of escape, lost her tail?
when did you last check on them? any odd behaviour? flicking etc?

Sadly once most of the tail gone livebeares never seem to make it.
Is she struggling to swim.
I would issolate her.
What are your water stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph.
How many fish and which type.

Any red edging to the tail or red streaks in what left on her tail.

No odd behaviour, no way it was caught in the filter. Looked at them the night begfore and all seemed fine. Our water peramiters are fine.

She was in the 75 gallon, now in the 10 gallon.
Never seen any agressive behaviour in any of the tankmates (listed in sig). def not overstocked.

Is she still alive if so is she struggling to swim.
Not sure about platsy but know guppys can lose half there tails in less than aday to bacterial finrot.
Usually when guppys tails have nearly gone you can bet finrot secondary infection.

One of my mollies is in the same position just now, overnight half his tail vanished, that was a few days ago. He's still swimming about happily and it hasn't got any worse. I can only assume someone else has had a bite at him (it's a molly only tank). If it's a nipped tail then there's every chance your fish will recover, keep the water clean as you can and it should grow back.

besides the tail she looks perfectly normal. Apperance and behaviour wise. I have two mollies in the tank, and the one is always following this one and poking this one. We were supposed to get two of the same sex but I don't know. No babies though.

You really think that the tail will grow back? She's by herself with just the dwarf frogs right now. Threw a little aquarium salt in too as I heard that it will help a little.
Thanks finally for some imput guys.

Yes her tail will grow back just have to make sure it dosn't get infected, melafix only works once the fins are healing.
The salt should be fine.
Good luck.

OMG Last night I was going to feed her and saw 4 babies! Didn't even realize she was pregnant. Actually we were told we had two of the same sex... Obviously not.

Congrats.
Plenty of hiding spaces and plants for them to hide in.
Females can store sperm for several months so don't always need a male in the tank.

Go to the livebearers part of the forum they have pinned topics on how to sex livebeares.
