Tail Damage

If you can buy a small hospital tank for him (nothing fancy) then that would be best. Keeping the fish in a net or breeder for more than a few days is a bad idea, they need more room to move around and will end up very stressed, and stressed fish = sick fish, they are much more prone to secondary infections etc.

You can often buy kits which include a filter and a heater. Pop a bit of the used sponge from your main tank filter into the hospital tank filter to 'seed' it with good bacteria.

Having a spare heater's always a good idea anyway, in case your main tank's heater breaks down.

It's very unlikely this will be the *only* problem you ever have with your fish, so a small outlay of £20 or so now will mean you are totally prepared for any other situations where you want to separate a fish.

Also useful for quarantining new fish before you put them straight into your main tank. And of course for fry. If you have male and female guppies, you'll be seeing a lot of them.

In terms of treatment, as Wilder said water quality is of paramount importance. If you have a small tank you can do a 30% water change daily with just a jug. I have treated nipped fins with Melafix before, with good results.
