My femal swordtale was gettingveryvery big and the gravid spot was dak i could even see the babies inside her or the eyes anyway so i put her in a plastic breeding trap and after 48 hrs still no bavies but she was still getting huge (almost like a baloon molly) so i took her out of the plastic breeder after reading about how they arent very good for the fish and placedher back in the tank and put alot of fake baby hideouts in my tank (few on top floating and some on bottom) after about 5 days the femal died :( and when i looked at her the belly was filled with blood on the inside what went wrong ? and is it possible she had so many babies she couldnt give birth all ive seen was 1 fry and he is doing fine in his net breeder i put him inand his poor mother was still huge when she died

Chances are that the babies got stuck and she suffered from internal bleeding as a result...sorry to hear this....there is nothing you could have done to prevent this...

It is good that one of the fry survived....have you named him/her yet?

Let us know how he/she goes....I love swordies

Becareful too, the fry might not have got stuck, the mother might have tried to abort, if a female feel the silightest bit of stress they will abort giving birth, and by the sound of it, the female might have decided to do this when it was too late to abort...

I too have a very VERY VERY FAT female swordtail, preggy too, but i had another two like her and i think one has off loaded, and i got a count of ten lovely little fry, while the other two are fat, now one i am suprised she hasnt burst from the weight she gets from the amount she eats as well as being preggy, but i haven given up hope that she might drop a few thousand some day soon, nd that might be the same as yours, they wont drop all their fry at the same time, they will do it in intervals, you just have to make them as comfortable as possible...

Me i prefer my fish giving birth in the main tank and then me tracking the fry down and scooping them out as fast as possible ;)

I normally only get five fry, but thats better than nothing, and recently i have been blessed by ten, yaay double figures

I named him jr i just wish he had some brothers and sisters to swim with in his net my sponge filter is in another tank at the moment to gte a good growth of bacteria and probably tomorrow im going to set up a fry tank for him he hasnt gotten any color but a black tail so most the time all you can see is a black triangle hiding in the plant hehe. whats a good fish that wont mess with the fry that i could put in my fry tank. it will be a bare 10g with a sponge filter and a clump of java moss but i need some kind of fish to keep in there all the time to keep thebacteria alive any suggestions

his mom was a very pretty light almost golden orange color with black fins and his father (the only other swords in the tank i bought his mom at ) is the same golden orange but his tail fin was orange and his "sword" was black

i dont know if the fry is a he or she yet but thers 6 females in the tank and 1 male and if i understand correctly somehow since theres more femals he will grow into a male it may just be with guppys or some other fish but i read that somewhere

Yeah.....the sex of the fry is also dependent on the pH of the water...though I can't remember which wasy it goes.

I too have also heard that livebearers will produce offspring that will be more benefit to the tank....i.e. less males then male fry will be more predominant. I have 5 platy fry in my 30gal ATM that are NEARLY at the age where I can tell them apart.....I want them to be girls...which they are now, until their anal fin folds up...then again....if they are girls chances are that they will be raped by their father.....EWWW!!!!

There are no fish that can go with the fry that won't eat it....even my tiny neons have been seen eating platy fry......he will be OK on his own and will grow MUCh quicker than if he had to fight for food

Good luck with the little guy....lettus know how he goes :)

I was thinking maybe a cory cat or pleco or somthing of that nature its not that i want it in my fry tank but eventually there wont be any fish in it to keep the bacteria alive or maybe im underestimating my fish i probably will always have fry perhapse i had a few guppys a couple years ago and they had babies then there babies had babies and im sure all of you guys know that routine

Yeah you have red finned swordtails there, i got four, a female, a male and two little female one from their mommy...

The fry normally start out a golden colour with these swordtails and about 4 to 5 weeks later they get their lovely black tails and reddy orange body, have you notice how prestem the fry look against their parents, they look soooooooo cute...

Though those black lips, man the goth type fish :p
