Swordtails

Hi, i am really confused - thats not hard

Can a swordtail change sex? I bought a trio of swords quite a while back (1male 2 female) And both remales got very fat and he danced around them both, though never saw fry but then they probably always got eaten as it is a community tank. Any way one of the females is now developing a sword on her tail which she never had before, its the same colour as his and is gettin longer, she has lost her belly, she chases my boy all over the tank and her anal fin is now starting to look like that of a males?!

Is this not all a bit odd, or is it normal

i think they can visibly change sex, (tail, gonodium) but they are still female, i had one do it a few years back

LOL very big subject but their only late devloping males as these can tale up to a year to change.

Yes, its not uncommon either. Apparently, if there are no more males in the colony, the dominent female will change sex. This happened with one of mine when i was a little kid.

Thanks for the help on that. Its pretty cool but a pain coz now i have two malesa ans one female grrrr
