At what age/time do males grow their swords.
Reason I ask is my mate bought what he thought was two females (he already had a male.) They are both same size, pretty well grown up as well. But one had just started to grow a sword. hmmmmmmmmm.....
Now he has two males and 1 female we guess which isnt a good thing.

I've had swordtails develope when they were as old as ten months. I have some velvet swordtails that had one male develope about five months, and three develope at about eight months. I took six males from the same batch of fry to the LFS at four months. It is really hard to know exactly when males will develope.

check out the "sexual change" topic..... it explains a whole lot due to things like this.... i heard that a female may develop the male-like characteristics, but it won't really change into a male.

hi
we have some 6 week old swordie fry at the moment & some of the bigger ones in the bunch you can already see the start of a sword appearing on the ones that are obviously male......but how long it takes to develop properly im not sure
