Does anyone know if it is common for a male swordtail to lose its tail?

I was netting my swordtails to put in a different tank and one of the tails of one of them has come off, it is swimming about as if nothing has happened.

Is this normal for a swordtail?

has the sword come off do do u rearly mean the whole tail?

Did it get torn off or are you talking about it slowly disappearing. Slowly disappearing is likely to be fin rot. You'll want to treat with fungal and bacterial medications.

with mine it was there one day not the next, he was new to the tnak if that could of had anything to do with it, but no signs of finrot or anything

Sorry for the confusion, it's the sword bit of the tail that has come off, the normal tail fins are fine there's no finrot etc, it's just the long bit of the tail, the sword, that has come off in one piece.

lilfishie, it sounds the same as what had happened to your male.

dunno, the LFS man said it was because he had mated with the female but i dont believe that

LOL that has to be a joke or your LSF is mad!!!!!!

Well the swords has been damaged in the tank or transport thats the only reason, you should treat with melifix or simular to stop any infections getting in and it will grow back in time.

 thats what i thought when they said it, but it grew back well, longer than it originally was
