I have three fish that I was told were swordtails in my tank (they are all female - my male died recently :( ). They are all orange with black markings, but two are bigger and chunkier than the other. How do you tell female platys and swordtails apart?
thanks

male swordtails have a well a sword tail.

platies are usualy fat like a football (american)

Thanks to all - I think these are platies! The male swordtail was obvious (duh!) but these girls are much fatter than he was. I got the smaller one at the same time as the male, so maybe she really is a swordtail - but she's got the same black fins and tail as the platy in the picture you attached, KJ. do swordtails have those markings?? The other two girls are even chunkier.

Will try to get some photos sorted.

What's a caudal peduncle?
thanks again,
Shelly

they come in many colours, red, orange black, pineapple, the body shape is best bet, same applies to platy's about colours
