I've been having a hair algae bloom since setting up my tank 5 weeks ago. I've had 10 zebra danios in it and a couple bunches of cabomba plant in there most of the time. Last week I bought 3 apple snails who have taken care of a minute amount of the hair algae (not a lot but some) and ALL of the rest types of algae (brown and green on the glass, sand, etc.).

When I decided to add a few swordtails yesterday I bought 3 (1m/2f) pineapple swords and 3 (1m/2f) red swordtails, I had no idea they ate algae like they do. I had read they will casually graze on it every once in a while but nothing like mine have done for the past two days.

They have eaten so much hair algae off of my plastic plants now that they barely have an appetite for the flake food (accept the big female pineapple, she's a PIG).

I was debating what kind of shrimp to get for the plants or whatever....but now it looks like I may not have to!

Anyway just wanted to update on the fact that swordtails are good hair algae eaters, at least for me so far. :flex:
