Hello, im a super noob here.. this is my first post and i just spent the last couple hours reading on the net about creating an aquarium with tropical fish.

All i've really done today was read about the different kinds of fresh water fish with pictures and characteristics.

I seem to think the SwordTails would be a nice fish. But i see they need a little bit of salt also. If i added Tetras (Cardinal Tetras) in with the SwordTails, would the salt content hurt the tetras? I think its only 1 teaspoon of salt per 5 gallons of water.

any info would be great.

thanks
mike

You don't need salt with the sword tails first off. Ask the store if they use salt, or if the breeder did (most do not). I don't use any salt with mine, and I also have a school of neons they don't interact at all (except for neons stealing food from the mouths of everyone else, lol).

Tetras and Swordtails get along fine and salt is not necessary for Swordies. If you want to add a little salt on occasion it should not bother the tetras too much. As long as you do not have any scaleless fish a pinch of salt now and then will not be a problem. Do not use salt with any additives, get aquarium salt or pure sea salt. I use a bit of pure sea salt in my growout tank from time to time but, my 112L has Yoyos in it so no salt for them.HTH

Actually, salt will bother the Cardinals a lot. They are true softwater fish from places like the Amazon river basin, where there are very few electrolytes of any kind in the water. So I wouldn't use it with them, seeing as the Swordies don't NEED it. :)
