Ok so I have a 55 gallon tank that has been running for a few years. The last time I checked the parameters, they were all fine. The tank has water conditioner in it. The tank consists of 1 red-tailed shark, 2 rosy barbs, 2 zebra danios, 1 red phantom tetra, 2 swordtails. I bought 3 swordtails (2 females, 1 male) one female died shortly after I brought them home. Recently my remaining female swordtail has been hanging around at the top of the tank, behind the heater, behind filters. Then the male would hang around the top as well, especially at night. They don't seem to be harrassed or bothered by the other fish. This morning I woke up and my female was on the bottom of the tank, laying in plants or on the rocks. She moves around, but not a lot. There are no marks or spots on her. What is wrong with my fish? Also, I was told that females do not have a "sword". After doing some research, I read that some swordtails develop more slowly than others. Last week I noticed that my female has a "sword". It's only small but I can clearly see it. Could it be possible that my female is really a male?

This may be for platies, but it is the same for swordtails
Instead on concentrating for the sword, which does take time to grow, look more at the fins, the fins can also sometimes take a while to grow but it's the best way to check.
