I bought a swordtail male yesterday to go along with my 2 females. I also have 2x blue gouramis male + female and 5x neon tetras. Everything seemed fine yesterday, today I wake up the guy is laying on the bottom on the gravel, I Started feeding the fish and he didn't even move while everyone else ate. After about an hour he starts turning on his side not even moving his fins the females are trying to push him but he wont move.. then he just flew away turned on his back and passed away.. Yesterday his skin seemed orange like the females but today it became yellow with red spots on one side of his body.. here is a picture

please help me identify the issue because if theres a disease running in my aquarium it must be dealt with..

All the other fish are fine and seem very happy.

My aquarium is 29gallons

what are your water stats? did you acclimatise? is your tank cycled? most LFS will give refunds if the fish dies within 24 hrs, you have to provide a water sample though (tank water that is)

The tank is cycled, I have been doing 20-25% water changes every 2-3 days. I have not tested the water so i cannot answer that one..

i'm curious as to why are you doing daily water changes if your tank is cycled?

It has been a week and a half since the tank was set up, I will be doing another water change in two days and then move on to once in 2-3 weeks. And as I have not tested the water yet, I was doing frequent water changes, just to make sure. I was reading somewhere that it takes about a week for a tank to cycle, not fully cycle which takes a few months but already begin the whole process, as I do not currently have the required tools to make sure, I am taking precautions.

moving back to the initial question - do you know what caused the swordtail male to die? was it a bacterial infection?

your tank is no where near cycled unless you had donated media from a mature tank, read the link in my signature on cycling, because you are doing tiny water changes your tank is no doubt full of ammonia, which is slowly killing and has killed your fish, read the section on fish in cycling, you need to do very large daily water changes to keep your fish alive, i will also mention neon tetras do not do well in new tanks so dont be too surprised if you loose them too, a essential piece of equipment is a liquid based test kit, you really need one of these, alternitivly return all fish to the shop and do a fishless cycle
