well my pair of females has produced some interesting colour veriation in a single brood, silver, black, black and deep orange, silver and orange, silver and black, orange, they produce on average 20-25 each brood, but was shocked today my largest female produced in excess of 40 fry, this is her third batch and she doesnt look at all well :( her tummy has sagged to the point she cant use her anal fins, she's leaning to one side (didnt during pregnancy)and isnt moving much she isnt gasping at all her breath pattern is normal, some of her fry are under developed than she normally produces, but non have died. my concerns are now for the smaller one that is way way bigger in the belly than she was, and is due any day, usually when my large female gives birth the smaller follows 24-48 hours later.

when she was giving birth she splilled out 4-5 at once not singular i havent seen her do that before!

i'm left woundering what to do with them all, my fry tank is way too small for that amount of volume as i usually have 50 from the pair not what could potentially be 100+. i have large substrate in my tank so letting her birth and leave them to be eaten isnt ideal as they will survive by hiding in substrate till larger uneatable size, (as i found out when moving tank i had to empty substrate into bucket and all these fish came out with it.

i have a deal with my LFS where i suply him these swordtails but wont take them till inch big my last brood are hitting that size now so will be freeing up 6gal tank, but still too small to house this volume.

i'm looking at my female swordy now as i write this, and i think she's dieing :( (tear rolls down the face) she's just sat at bottom of tank slowly moving her swim fins back and forth. she was going to be rehomed soon and all will have to tell niece and nephew some bad new in the morning i think.
