Well its the first time i've ever had a swordtail, and when I baught it for my daughter it was already pregnet. I know this beause she only piked out one and after 3 days in the tank there are about 25 small fry!!! How long will it be before I can tell the male from the female---(and how an I)

Males gonopdoium produce after 1 month, this is usually visible and easy to spot after about 8-12 weeks (can take longer though).

The only problem with swordtails is they have been known to change sex (females turn to males) but this is usually only on older swordtails..

Saying how long it take to sex any fish varies on several factors sadly and swordtails are one of the worst for variable time's.

At 78f on average you can sex them from 12 weeks plus, how ever if you have several fish together the young males or parent males can suppress other young males, these will not develop any visual sexual differences until their 8-12 months (however these will never produce fry but look female).
These suppresses males (late developers) are the strongest, largest males and usually the best breeders as they have put much longer into growing.

Feeding just flake foods is not the best, adding some live or frozen foods now and then is always good.

I had a female who had a least 4 drops, she then was constantly been harrased by a male and soon after, she went very thin and developed a sword, grew a gonopdium, and then about 1 month later died.

it was really strange to see her develop in to a male, it was one of my koi swords, its was as if the change was to much for her body to handle and never recovered and gradually got weaker and weaker and just popped her/his cloggs

It has happend to one of my females too. I am not sure if they produce Viable young though.
