Swordtail Breeding And Cannibalizm

I bought a net that clips on to my 30 gallon tank. My swordtail is very pregnant, but when she is going to have her babies, I dont want the ones that I didnt net to be cannibalized. How do I know when the time to net is ready, and do you find any special way of keeping fishlings (or whatever their called) safe?
