I had a cycle of my new 20G high tank and all was well. Then i got 2 high fin sword tails (male/female). Then the male died from ick mostly. By the time i figured out what it was, he had gotten it all over.

Now the female swordtail is pregnant, and seems to be doing well. I can see the eyes of her babies in her belly.

Before noticing that she was pregnant I got a new male swordtail, (red, not high fin). Once introducing him to the tank he seemed to be social with the female as well as the female platy I have as well.

Now it seems that the male has gotten slightly aggressive to the female swordtail. I am not sure if he is biting her, but it seems he is just bothering her all the time. Chasing her up and down the tank, and not letting her be. Is this a normal reaction? I am not sure if this this swordtail is going to work if he is going to continue with this.

Thanks in advance for any feedback :).

Also do swordtails have a certain time they like to let the fry go? or certain conditions? I have seen the eyes of the fry in her belly for a few days now and was curious.

Make sure your fish have plenty of places to hide and escape. This might cool things down a bit.

I'm not positive about Swordtails, but for Platies, it's about four weeks if the water is at 78F. It's not always the same, but it is a good estimate. Basically when she looks like she is going to explode, it's probably within the week.

The fry are usually born early in the morning,

My swords usually gave birth in night because of the darkness. The male is chasing her because he wants to breed but she is already pregnant so it is not going to work. What you should do is get another female or more and put them in there and there should be no problem. Hope this helps.

Yeah i was thinking about getting more females, but i do have the limit for size for fish in there at the moment, so I do not want to add any more. As long as he is not being to aggressive, but just seems to be nudging her. And she still has all fins and full color so just seems to be attracted to the sweet females in the tank ;).

Also they seem to be different species, (high fin female, red male), and i am not sure if this kind of breeding will work regardless.
