Hi, I have 5 swordtails in my tank and they wont breed!
3 females and 2 males is the ratio. The temperature is always around 80f and they eat lots. Its in a 20 gallon tank with tetras and cories. The ph, last time i checked, was around 7.7 or so. Any ideas on what i should change??
Thanks

If they are mature and you are right about their sex then I'm puzzled as to why you don't have fry... If you lived closer I'd give you some of mine. :) How long have you had them?

ALASKA

I have a few suggestion into why this is...

One, Swordtails are like us Humans, you see some fit girl/guy over the street you will want them, its the same with swordtails, you might not have a swordtail male/female that any of them find attractive, there is also that they really like it when it is warm, sorry but i work in Celeus, and i know that my fish love it at 30 degrees Celeus, i know that is pretty high but they love it and so i dont really want to lower it, but it send the swordtail crazy for one another...

Swordtails are easy to breed as long as they are happy, if they are ill, or the temperture is not to their liking, they can be off put from breeding...

;)

I got some at the begining of last month and some in the middle.
Wow 30C is pretty high! One of my sword tail males  does have a short stubby tail. I might try getting a new male or two. thanks

I might try getting a new male or two
NO!!! male can be mean if there are more of them. get more females. there is a god chance that they minght already be pregnate when u get them. look for the fattest one in the store.

how about I get more of both? two more females and one more male?

She is right mate, i have two male swordtails and they fight, even though i have two female swordtails, they do stick to either one of the female swordtail but when they cross in the tank they go at it, also if you didnt know this, which i find interesting, Swordtail can change sex at will, if you get more females, there is a good chance that one may turn into a male and bob is your uncle and liz is your auntie, so i wouldnt bother trying to get more males, i know they are pretty, but good chance be you would be better off with females, because they tend to be less violent (I did not say they wouldnt though)...

I have swordtails and mollies in my 55 gal and good ratios of both, but they havent bred and I have had the tank for months. I have asked for help but nothing works so not to sure.

Its just as i said before, they are just like humans, they see a fish they want and say "Hey, i want that fishy!" :hey: or they can be too stressed out to breed, for some reason or another... it can be many things, but be sure that when they do breed, you will know

;)

-_-
as my dad used to have hundreds of swordtails (well it seemed like 100's) I decided to buy just 1 female and 1 male. 2 years later and no young, the female is so big it is about double the size of the male and is really fat. I think I know by now that I will never get any fry from that pair - never mind.

Well you shouldnt give up mate, surely you could try get another female, and if it does not breed with your male, it could revert and turn into a male itself and then could mate with the female, swordtails are really good fish to keep and breed...
