Hi all my swordtail has just had some babys but i didnt know that they were so small compaird to platies and mollys? Is this normal? Sorry this is my very first lot of sordie babys. ) I only managed to save 4 as they were so small pluss we have had a power cut for over 12 hours and it was to dark for me to see other than with a torch it lasted from 9 in the evening till after 12 the following afternoon but at least all suvived in my tank so that was a big relife. Ive had to buy another breeder net for them as the other biger fry keep ataking them but they seem to be fine. Any info on swordie fry will be a big help.
Fishy regards, Steve.
Hi. Steve. In my experience swordie fry are smaller than those from mollies. As far as rearing them goes we feed 3 times daily with Liquifry no2 and Tetramin Baby powder food. I usually keep only the number of fry that I need & only keep them in the breeding trap for as long as they are in danger from the other fish. I know that a lot of members on the forum are against breeding traps & nets but I dont keep large numbers of fry in them. ( 5 at the most ).
Good luck with the new babies.
With my previous batches of Swordie fry I have noticed that they are very small but if you get the female in the breeder at just the right time they can have a lot. One of the two females that were birthing had only about 25 at a time but the other one had as many as 130 or so. Unfortunetly they have both died in the last two months(one died a few days ago). I do however have three females and a male from the more prolific female that are nearing maturity and have High hopes that they will be as good at breeding as Doris and Boris were.
