i just setup a bathtub today for breeding swords for feeders. How many do you think i could have in an average bath tub and what hides to use for the fry?

If you are going to use them as feeders then I would buy 6-8 adult females and 1 or 2 adult males and leave them in the bathtub. They will populate the tub quite quickly. In truth, you don't need any males as each female will have numerous broods without any males being present.

As for refuge for the fry, the thing with swords is that the young generally hug the bottom for a few days after being born and so I would use a layer of coarse gravel / small pebbles as a substrate with dense planting, java moss or if you don't care what it looks like, then some artificial plants or other refuge like wool, spawning mops or something similar.

Thats sooo australian lol. You got the nice weather and partial water changes must be a doddle! The temp here is about -1 atm (its midnight) Must be a nice 40 where you are lol.

Anyway. a bath tub is HUGE! you just need a filter capable of cleaning it out. I'd use gravel and fake plastic plants. Alternitivly, throw in some old fishing wire or anything safe for the aquarium water. You dont exactly need your bath tub to look nice do you. i'd have 10% of the tank populated with hiding places. You could even use old pieces of wood, here is a link to the common ones. But you can even use oak wood, as long as you boil it for long enough to make it waterlogged and remove the tannis.

Add a few plates, cups, dishes, etc etc, just use your imagination. Heck, even add some plastic childrens toys. Just make sure the plastic is safe.

we have a rainwater tank which overflows everytime it rains so plenty of water for topping it up. Temps in summer 30-40c, 30c at the moment, yea its great living in aus. Will juck in my java moss and plenty of wood. Thanks guys.

It sounds awful but it's the best way to feed some large cichlids.

I'm a softie though, I clove oil my feeders before I use them.
