Well, non-planted is technically incorrect since I do intend on having a few plants in there....like my val and Anubias. The rest will be plastic fantastic!!!

I have decided not to have a fully planted tank anymore basically due to the maintenance and lack of pleasing results for a lot of time and money. Don't get me wrong, my plants have improved heaps since adding CO2 and using ferts regularly but the maintenance has become too much. Unfortunately I have let my planted tank suffer over the past few months primarily due to lack of time but also due to lack of interest I guess. If I really wanted to keep it fully planted I guess I would be able to find the time. I like the idea of being able to chop the tops off my val every few weeks without having to remove other plants, add ferts, monitor CO2 levels etc. My plants have also suffered recently due to a very hot Aussie summer where to cool the tank down I have had to substantially reduce my lighting.

Sounds like I am making excuses huh -_-

But the decision is made!!! And I am kind of excited about taking out the laterite, getting new gravel in there and decorating without plants

On a final note I would like to thank zig, jimboo and gf225 for helping me a lot over the past 12 months. You all have planted tanks that I will be eternally jealous of and I will still keep visiting this part of the forum to get even greener eyes that I allready have  At least this time I won't be pestering you guys with stupid questions :S

Hey!

Don't be so down on your efforts. I was just like yourself about a month ago. I just sat back and asked myself what I really wanted to achieve, and took it from there. Yes, planted tanks get harder to look after, as you become more successful in looking after them!. You have done well to realise your technical boundaries, and work them out.

I just keep on spending money on goodies, much to my wifes amusement(NOT!). I love getting myself into trouble.... :fun:

I was like this 12 months ago......it was then that I invested in good lighting, got pressurised CO2, started EI dosing and supplemented my gravel with laterite. It was great for a little while....but I guess the enthusiasm wore off. I would rather put my energies into keeping my fish happy and healthy than having to worry about ferts, CO2, substrate, pruning etc.

Don't get me wrong, I would love to have a planted tank.....but until I am rich enough to be able to pay someone to maintain it then I am going to have to stick with what I can manage.

i completely understand mate, i hope you enjoyed your journey along the planted road. you did manage to create a lovely tank so you can tick that box on you lifes achievements list. you've made your plants pearl which in itself is a proud moment for any planted tank keeper. it's actually a very simmillar feeling to seeing your first fry being born dont you think?

the dam things do take over your life though dont they... oh and the wallet...

all i can say is i'm honoured to have been able to bring some enjoyment to someone on the other side of the planet through our shared hobby. i probably enjoyed looking at your finished tank pics as much as you did. your more than welcome for the help and i wish you the best of luck with the next project.

......we all know the real reason though... your too busy flying about on your new scooter to spend time planting glosso with tweezers... nuff said...

catch you later mate.
