I have a tank which has been running now for 5 years with super fine sand. It looks great in the planted tank and the amano shrimp keep the sand extremely clean. Recently i swapped out all the fish in that tank to one of my newer tanks. I then put a school of 12 tiger barbs in the tank and every time that it comes to feeding they move so fast for food that they make a mess with the sand and the filter ends up sucking it all up which then accumulates with sand in its motor and i am afraid to lose yet another Aquaclear 70 that is established very well with bacteria. So my question is if i take out all this sand which has been in the tank for 5 years and replace it with florite black will it cause me to loose too much beneficial bacteria?I know most of it resides within my filter but i am curious as if such a change will make my tank have any spikes. I don't want to not lose another filter and need to come up with something. This is the gravel i was looking into http://www.seachem.com/Products/product_pages/FlouriteBlack.html
Has anyone ever used it or recommends a better one? I use flora base mixed in with a few things in other tanks but i do not want to buy all that again since its 1 tank and i will have too much spare gravel.
