Im currently using two fluval U3's in my tank and Im still not happy with the level of filtration. After about a week or so, my plants and rocks etc have a fine layer of dirt on them. It comes off but its a royal pain in the backside. I've tried to eliminate as many sources as possible e.g. I stopped using pellets which was a major source but it doesn't matter what I do, I always have SOME level of dirt that gets through the filters. I've even angled the output of the filters upwards so that the water isnt directly spraying at a rock or plant but it still forms a settlement pattern towards the centre of the tank.
I've therefore been thinking of changing to an external filter (Eheim Professional or similar) to see if this improves things. Do people think this would help? My thinking is there are more stages of filtration than the internals. Obviously this would mean moving from a mature filter to a new one. Would it just be a case of bringing as much of the filter material over with me or is there a better way of doing it?
