Im currently using two fluval U3's in my tank and Im still not happy with the level of filtration. After about a week or so, my plants and rocks etc have a fine layer of dirt on them. It comes off but its a royal pain in the backside. I've tried to eliminate as many sources as possible e.g. I stopped using pellets which was a major source but it doesn't matter what I do, I always have SOME level of dirt that gets through the filters. I've even angled the output of the filters upwards so that the water isnt directly spraying at a rock or plant but it still forms a settlement pattern towards the centre of the tank.

I've therefore been thinking of changing to an external filter (Eheim Professional or similar) to see if this improves things. Do people think this would help? My thinking is there are more stages of filtration than the internals. Obviously this would mean moving from a mature filter to a new one. Would it just be a case of bringing as much of the filter material over with me or is there a better way of doing it?

Do you think it'll actually improve the dirt situation or am I just wasting my time?

Agree with the others to just put the mature media in the new filter. I don't know if things will improve, but I'm anxious to see if it will because this is just what I'm considering as well.

Agree that you should move all the media across and do checks. Another thing to think about is where is the dirt coming from? I assume that the intake is sucking it up and firing it around the place - can you move the filter intake up an inch?

The filter is a vertical tower design of about 12" and draws water in from each side, passing it through foam and ceramic media before ejecting it out the centre. I can adjust the height so that its nearer the waters surface but I've a feeling that would just alter the distribution pattern as it sprays out.

In terms of the source of dirt, I've reduced the food down, changed type, remove as much poop as possible with gravel vac but it still seems its just general detritus.

Put the mature media in the new filters and your set! ;)
