rihgt now i have 4 tiger barbs (plan to get 8 more for 55 )
1 sepia tetra
1 bn
2 male platys (hoping to add 3 more, and i have one female, which i only want one femlae)
3 juli corys (i would get 4 more)

i want to also get 3 discus
and i would get rid of sepia tetra and add 8 neons, and 1 more BN.

is this good to have, if not i would be happy to hear other stocking ideas, and if its good what else could i add. also it would be mostly fake plants with a few real plants which i have now and i would have peat in the filter like i do now, and i will add more driftwood.

thanks,
ryan

You have some stocking issues.

Discus require higher temperatures then the other fish you listed, and need to be kept in groups of 4 or 5 (5 being preferable.)

Tiger barbs will end up nipping the Discus, so thats a no no.

sepia tetra? Never heard of that. Do you mean Serpae Tetra? Tetras are schooling fish, and need to be kept in groups.

Some say BN plecostomus are okay with Discus, but personally I still wouldn't put them in.

Neon tetra will could quite possibly end up as food for the Discus also.

Discus really need to be kept specifically. If you are interested in these, they should be the centre of your attention. Personally, if you have to ask stocking question, and ask if three Discus are okay, then I don't think you are ready for them, sorry!

Best of luck,

DL

in evry tank i have seen they all have neon tetras with the discus. also i have a neighbor that has never had a problem with the fish that i suggested. they are in same size tank as mine and all his are healthy and he has been into fish keeping for over 30 years.

that wouldnt be a good idea. though they arn't really considered big schooling fish, they still like to be in larger groups. i think im going to meet half way wilth discus lovur. i will take out the neones and change that to serpas.my new set up will be as followed. advice is welcomed but i still dont think tiger barbs will be a problem!____________________________________________________________________________
-4 discus
-5 Tiger barbs (im keeping them, and will take out IF i have a problem)
-2 albino BN (mabye just keeping one, UNDECIDED)
-6 juli corys
-5 or 6 serpae tetras (and i only have 1 serpae tetra at moment due to it being very old where the others have died due to old age)undecides amount of MALE platys (only male to prevent breeding)

*if tigers dont work i would change them to german rams which i know many people place in warm water to boost coloring and they do fine

i have a 55 gal with 3 discus, 20 neon tetras, 4 various gouramis, 2 angelfish,2 bala sharks, 2 braziliana cichlids, 1 crazy catfish, 12"plecostumus, all have been living together happily for over 18mths......i dont recommend putting tiger barbs in there tho crazy fish

Tiger Barbs are really aggressive. I wouldn't put them into that tank!

And 1 Discus, thats horrible! freshwaterfishlover, please do research, and give good advice...

Remember, 55 gallons is pretty small, and angelfish may not get along very well with them. Angels are compatible with Discus, but I wouldn't add them in anything under 70 gallons. Everything else sounds okay, keep the pleco well fed, and make sure you are doing daily or every other day water changes. Over filter the tank also, if possible.

Platy may be okay, I would think much better then tiger barbs!

I guess you could try neons, the best way to do it though, is it get big neons, and small Discus, so the Discus grow up learning they aren't food.

Be very careful though, agian you may end up with some problems, but I guess it would be okay to try. Discus are very sensitive, so stress caused by aggression might be very bad!

-_- You may end up with some problems.... I feel sorry for those Discus. Some of those fish will out grow that tank...

not to mention the 12" plecos will get even bigger. Bala's should be in groups of 6, and need more that 55g as they too will approach the 12" mark.

just those two balas and the pleco make that tank overstocked.

so if i take out the tiger barbs, you will think my set up will be fine?
4 discus
-5 Tiger barbs(INSTEAD I WILL GET GERMAN RAMS?)

o i have already figured it may be a little overstocked. over the years i learned that weekly changes are the best, which i do now. also i have 2 60 gallon mechanical filter that will run. now all i need to know is what kind of sand can i use? i know that play sand can but i dont want that because it adds i belive nitrates which increase algea growth.oh and do you reccomend me putting peat into the filter to lower ph?
