I've just complete a fishless cycle of a tank and I've now got some unwanted wildlife in it.

I'd put some aquarium plant in there as a temporary storage space and the tank seems to be the playground now of a number of occupants. I'm fairly sure that they will be ok with any fish I intend to put in and may even provide a little food for them but I want to be sure...JUST IN CASE!

The first little blighter is a small pinhead size flea creature, not unlike Daphnia but I can't see any legs on it. It is whiteish but partially translucent and swims in a jerky movement. On close scrutiny in may have a couple of hairs at the 'front' end but I can't be entirely sure as my eyes aren't that good. I managed to capture some (poor quality) video of one of them to see if that rings any bells with anyone. I've got at least a dozen of these critters and maybe more.

The second is a very small worm. This one I'm pretty certain is harmless and should disappear once the fish are introduced. It is about 3mm or so long and sort of rust coloured and free swims wildly in the water. I've only seen one or two of these.

The others are snails but I know what to do about these.

Oh and I will be completely hoovering and cleaning up prior to introducing fishies just in case anyone panics about the state of the tank at present.

Cheers for any insight!

For whatever reason, I couldn't open your video, but if it helps, click HERE to see a picture of a water flea. Is this what you are seeing in your tank?

The worm, again, without being able to see it, could be something more problematic...but unfortunately I cannot remember right now if it could possibly be a dragonfly larvae or some other type of larvae that I have read/heard about a while ago. Sorry about that! I figured I would bring it up in case someone else can add more about it than I can right now.

I have those "fleas," too! They look like daphnia, to be honest, but I couldn't tell without a microscope. :p

I couldn't load the clip either. The white dots with a jerky movement do sound like water fleas/daphnia. A red worm thing could be a mossie type larva/blood worm. Doesn't sound like a dragonfly larva as these are not worms, but long bodied insects with legs and are quite distinctive, could probably liken it to a sort of earwig shape. Hope that helps a bit. :good:

i had these once. it was in my 10g after i moved all the fish out into my larger tank. i also had a few little slug looking things crawling on the glass.
i did a 50 percent water change that killed all of them.

maybe keeping a empty tank with these in it would make a good fry tank?

Thanks for your replies.

It's pretty much told me what I suspected anyway. I'll just water change, clean up the tank then stock it as planned. It's just an overspill tank. I'll put a couple of larger fish in there for the moment but it will be just a fry tank. At least I can be fairly sure that my creatures aren't the devil incarnate that will destroy every living thing that even looks at the tank

Thanks
