There is a large fantail in my mum's pond has been suspended upside down for a long time. I never noticed it (don't look in there much) until last weeked, when we moved all the fish out to close the pond down (fish now s a very large pond at my aunt's). I have now moved the fish into a tank to treat with swimbladder treatment. I have two Q's:

  • Is the treatment usually successful?
  • Been told that salt can help as well?

I think my mum said that it has been in this condition for a while (months) but looking at the fish, it looks in good condition in that it has clear eyes, good colour and it's fins are all intact with no fraying.

Advise very welcome.

maybe it ate too much dry food and inhaled lots of air.

If it is a swim bladder problem there isn't much you can do. Salt can help but not always.
Make sure the fish gets lots of vegetable matter in its diet and keep it in shallow water. If it gets better in a few weeks then good otherwise it probably won't.

Personally I wouldn't keep fancy goldfish in ponds, especially in the UK, They are simply not hardy enough to survive
