I think two of my neons have swim bladder trouble. I thought they were just very stressed out by an over-amorous male platy that I had. He even had the female platys hiding and "running" from him, one took up residence with the corys in a bogwood cave! He started to become aggressive at feeding therefore the neons found it a stressful time as he was zooming around the tank. I have got rid of him now but not before 2 neons started to swim strangely. One would swim horizontally but at an angle /, the other started swimming head up and jerkily looking very distressed. He is the one I am most worried about. They both have been harassed by the other neons. Is there a pecking order in neons?
I have hospitalised them but instead of giving them 24-48 hrs to calm down I have started the swim bladder infection treatment and melafix. All environmental factors are ok.
Have I done the right thing treating them so quickly, once again panic stations?
My questions are if they don't have a swim bladder infection will the treatment be detrimental to them?
Should I treat the rest the rest of my tank?
I have read that the treatment for swim bladder in fections are not useful and the fish are likely to die anyway. I am using Interpet swim bladder treatment.

Thanx in advance for any replies. Xanthe, the panic.

Have the neons bloated up, the jerking movements are not good, they sound stressed to me, how are there colours are the still vibrant.

Not bloated and colour is good. The / one ate some food but the other hasn't. At 11 they are both kind of swirling around in the water. I think I'll do a water change and see if that makes a difference.

I would issolate the sick fish as something is not right.

Did a 50% water change at 11pm last night and moved the filter within the tank to lessen the impact of water flow. This morning they are looking a lot better. One is still /, the other can swim upright now without falling over. I might do another water change tonight to try and reduce the medication even more.
If it was just stress how long until they recover? I left the female platy that was hiding, in the main tank but she is still lying low. Should I remove her as well or just give her more time in the tank until she realises that he is not there any more? Although the big momma platy is now chasing the other platys. If she is about to fry, does she get cranky?

It could of been the med, tetra can be funny with meds, the platy looks like she ready to give birth if she hiding and being moody.

Thanx for your help and support, Wilder. So next time, if anything occurs, isolate the ailing fish in QT and monitor for 24 hrs before adding any meds especially if it is neons. Hurrah, I'm going to be a fish-granny again. More wee wagtail platys. Yours gratefully Xanthe
