So after having a little read around a minute ago I read something posted by Bignose about using plants that grow in the water but also grow up out of it, this would mean there would be no need to add CO2 as it could be extracted from the air(?). Could anyone give me the names of plants like this please?

I know a lot of plants can be grown both emersed and submerged... most of them are bog plants. You'll find them used in terrariums or in ponds quite often.

Some really easy ones are anubias, java fern, and most sword plants, though those don't grow out too easily. Floating plants usually take air from above, like duckweed, water lettuce, amazon frogbit, and riccia. Lilies, pennywort, and other plants with long stems and floating leaves often send them straight to the top.

My Anubias is forever popping out flowers, unfortunately they never last long enough to get above water lol.

Most of the plants that I get from Tropica and Greenline have been grown emersed.

I used to have Rotala rotundifolia that was growing in a tall tank. When it reached the surface it just grew along the top without breaking the surface. When I grow it in less height, it breaks the surface and the emersed form grows. I would imagine that most stems could grow out of the water`s surface if the tank is not too tall.

Dave.

I'd prefer not to try floating plants. So you recommend rotala? I don't have enough light/ferts for it I don't think? No ferts and depends what tank for lighting, but it's about 2wpg roughly I think on most tanks.
