I went to Trebaron Garden Centre today as I was looking around several fish stores for some plants and shrimp.

Whilst there I was shocked at the state of fish,

A pleco chewing down on a guppy at least 12 hours dead.
An elephant nose fish unable to balance itself.
Dirty tanks.
Some tanks, fish weren't moving, none of the were, really spooky.

I came across what appeared to be a Cichlid tank, now there were about 8 of these in the box, all around 3" , all floating around 3/4 of the way up the tank, not moving at all, they weren't gasping for air at the top, just lower down, horizontal, not moving. Is this a usual behaviour for Cichlids as I know nothing about them.

african cichlids are normally pretty lively, even the little ones. i don't think i would purchase any fish from a store that had the conditions you mentioned.
