We are getting a little concerned about one of our Zebra Danios. We bought him/her about 4 weeks ago and it looked a bit larger that the others then, however its stomach has really ballooned in size.

We first felt it may have been pregnant but we thought it would have layed its eggs by now?

It doesnt seem to be struggling or impaired in any way and is feeding fine but we are still concerned as it looks like it may literally pop any day soon.

Thanks for the help.
Mike and Rach

What do you feed your fish on, try some shelled peas and daphnia.to make sure it isn't constipation.

Is it just one that you bought? I only answer because I bought 5 zebra dannios and all but 2 died. One of the fish that survived looks deformed and has a huge stomach. He/ she has been like that for several months and has not laid any eggs. So I wonder if they are prone to disease. What other fish are they in with?

Tokis-Phoenix, mine didn't look anything like that. Just a swollen belly and is still the same after 7 months. Eats and swims fine, just deformed.

No, will try and get a photo or my lon-lived deformed fish. See you tomorrow about 10am

I think its just fat and/or swollen with eggs. If theres nothing wrong with it then its a female. My danios are pretty fat too.

Here's my dannio, the picture is blurred but you can see her shape.

I don't think thats right. Paulioo, do you know what was wrong with yours?

Well from looking at all the symptoms (sp) I think it might have been TB. Its stomach swelled really big, then over time it began losing lots of weight. Until I finally woke up one morning to find it had a curved spine, like a Z shape. So I had to kill it :(

It would be interesting to see if the danio in question in this thread, looked like mine did.

It wasnt a very nice disease, the poor guy became so thin and weak.

Paul.

Ah.

We have zebra danios - an a couple of them are like that too.

We always assumed they were preggers, as the females are usually bigger than the males anyway, and before they were bloated like that, they were bigger than the others.

However, the otherday, one of the two went missing, and we found it dead a couple of days later at the back of the tank - sounds bad, but looked like its belly had literally exploded - there was a 'rip' down the middle of it.

We assumed that it was ill and that the couple of days after the death had caused it to swell up. However, would be interested to hear if this isnt the case.

Doesn't really help much does it! But you're not alone!
