So again I'm new to this whole fish breeding thing and I have a pregnant platy. She has a big gravid spot and from what I've read that the anal becomes open more and white when they are ready to give birth, is this true? I was wondering because I've seen other pregnant platys, but mine isn't that big, I mean she's fat but not as big as others I've seen. Does this only mean she doesn't have a lot of babies in her is all?

The gravid spot isn't a particularly good indicator of impending birth, but certainly the white birthing tube is. She will also go and hide at the back of the tank when she's ready. If she's young and it's her first time, then she won't have as big a batch as she will later in life.

If you have at least one male in with her, she will be dropping fry every 4-6 weeks from now to eternity. If you are intending to try to keep fry, just be warned - platy fry are very difficult to move on, because they are so readily available, and cheap.

Well I've been cross breeding my fish for the most part, I have a few platys, who are all female, and two swordtails, one male and one female, Im hoping to have the male swordtail breed with one of my platys to see what happens.

I've had a fish tank before and bred fish, just this time I'm getting more into the concept.
