I get sunlight into the corner of the tank in the afternoon. Is it ok?

That is fine. Always better to have morning sunlight, but a little in the afternoon is fine, you may have to adjust your lighting to compensate for it.

I remember you talked about the position of the light in the tank. Did you say it's better towards the front of the tank so that the fish are not in shadow? I can't remember.

Yes, you want your light to be on the front edge of the tank. Two reasons the fish won't be in a shadow, but also the plants will face the front of the tank, so you see the heads of any stemmed plants you have

I'm a bit worried as I think I have to silicon the light to the lid

I had a similar problem. The light that was built into the hood of one of my tanks was absolute crap. I ordered another that you placed over the top of the tank but of course that meant I couldn't keep the hood on.
I put up with it for ages though as my life didn't depend on it. In fact it looked nice being able to look down into the tank.
I then had to move the tank to another position in the house where there was just too much intense sunlight....If you could believe the British weather would allow such a thing.
The actual width of the new light was just a little inside the width of the hood, which what I think you have there too. I tried silicon but it didn't really work for me as I didn't have sufficient areas of the light body that touched the hood.
So I squeezed it up against the hood as tightly as possible, with the extender arms as tight to the inner hood sides and just duck-taped them together. Works a treat.
However you go about it I'm sure you'll find an answer.
