i want to set up a sump but i don't want to drill any holes in the tank. i know there are articles and journals people post everywhere but i can't really seem to find what i'm looking for. basically, i want to turn my 20 gal(us)into a sump for my 30 gal. i'm worried about outgoing water going faster than incoming water and what would happen if there is a power outage and water would go all over the place when it comes back on. of course these are just some of my worries, as i'm sure sumps are more complicated than that.

i'm a person who's pretty bad at reading instructions and i need diagrams and pictures to lead my way so please don't link me to giant journals please! lol :D

If you don't want to drill your tanks then the only other option would be to use an overflow box. A good site to use is www.melevsreef.com. Its got information on sump design, overflow boxes, pumps etc, etc.

Overflow boxes do work but, they can lose syphon if not maintained (removing any air bubbles that form inside). If this happens then your sump pump will continue pumping water, causing your display tank to overflow. Drilling your tank is a better long term solution as it removes the possibility of syphon failure. Overflow boxes can also be noisey too, unless fitted with a durso standpipe.

Think it's deltec that does an overflow box that will not syphon back, or is it Tunze, oh lordy - this is where ben usually comes along and tell you which it is

I debated over flows for a while but decided drilling was a better option there are a few options available but not sure on any safe ones for the reasons seffie quoted
