So for this 1133 litre tank that I was very lucky to be given I am starting to think down the lines of a sump a I don't fancy all the pipe work of 3 or so external filters in the tank.

So onto my question, how do if go about fitting a sump to an 8ft tank which isn't drilled to take one?

Get it drilled for a few quid, have a look on youtube at a few vids will give you a better understanding how it all comes togther :good:

I've been told about an overflow box which then goes into the sump but apparently there is a risk of after a power cut the sump pumps to much water back to the tank and the tank over flows. It does mean you don't have to drill the tank. Anyone know about these.

who would I see about getting it drilled? Would your standard glazier be up to it?

yeah can put a weir in the tank that will take care of overflow, drilling you can do your self its very easy, but also yes any decent glass place can do it. You will not to make sure that the tank pannel being drilled is not tempered glass.

Ok thanks Al, will have to make the choice of trusting myself or pay to get it done by a glazer who should know what he's doing.

drilling in very easy, use a wooden template to hold the bit in place, clamp it in place and let the weight of the drill do the work, it could take up to 30 minutes to cut through a 10mm piece of glass, its a slow process, even with a diamond bit.

A sump for me woudl depend on the sort of fish you are going to stock. messy ones, fine, sump would be ace, relatively clean fish, i'd just plum for a couple of big external filters.
