My apartment this summer is quite hot during the day, and my Tropical Fish Tank (clown loaches, gourami's and zebras) are sitting in a tank now reaching 83 degrees and I am having trouble keeping it cool! I keep putting ice cubes in a plastic baggy and and its a quick fix which doesnt seem to help much over time. We are going away for a week soon - what do I do??

Breaking the water surface is a good way to bring down the temp, though I think it is bad for plants, so if you have a planted tank, you need to be careful. If the tank dosen't have live plants, adding a bubble stone or two can help keep the tank temp down.

I know there was a thread on this awhile ago... I will try to find it...

ETA: Here it is! :good:

hi
we fill empty clean cool drink bottles with water freeze them & pop one or 2 in if our tank is getting too hot. also leaving the tank lid open can help but prob not a good idea if its the only cover your tank has (the fish may jump out) if its really hot you could turn the lights off & leave them off whilst your away, maybe not good for plants but it will help the tank stay at a reasonable temp.
as said increasing surface agitation will help
good luck

I have a 10 gal which I'm keeping around 76 F by using a chiller made from an ice chest filled with frozen soda bottles . A hose runs from a powerhead through the chest and back into the tank via the filter. I fill itt in the morning and again in the evening.

I am having trouble with lowering my tank temperature. I wasn't aware of the problem and tried to lower the temp for my Cories as it was around 82F, it has now dropped to 79F, but the heater is completely off! I am considering placing ice cubes on the surface daily to keep temperatures down, and also try to induce a panda/bronze cory spawn. :)
