Hi all,

I did post this question in Tropical Chit Chat, but out of 6/7 replies all I got was flamed for not doing a fishless cycle, so am asking here as 'newbies' tend to be treated better.

As suggested in the TCC forum post, I will be checking my water stats tonight. I only have a nitrItes test kit and as these have gone to zero i assume tank is cycled, but will be purchasing a master test kit tonight.

I have cycled the tank using Danios, and want to know what suitable tank mates there are. I like colourful fish, but maybe a bit bigger than the danios. Hoping to build a good community tank, so some that will be future proof would be handy too! Am planning to get an Otto, or algae cleaner similar as well, so would need to be compatible with that!!

I am currently considering:
  • Guppies
  • Mollies
  • Angels
  • Rummy Nose Tetra
But am open to more suggestions/comments on my current list.

I am also aware of the fact that any fish I add will cause a mini cycle and that I need to add them slowly.

Hopefully responses here will be better than on my earlier post, and will stay on topic.

Thanks in advance

Adam

I looked through that thread and there wasn't a single person flaming you. Go back and read it again.

And as much as you might not want to think about it, people here are going to ask questions about your tank that aren't directly related to the thread topic. That's how we educate people and save fish. Just because you don't immediately hear what you want in a thread doesn't mean you should just start another identical thread. There are enough redundant threads here. Please be a good forum citizen.

I'll respond to your question in the original thread.

Thanks.

I do apologise MH, perhaps I got the context of "flaming" wrong. I work in IT and appreciate the need to be a good 'forum citizen' as you put it, I understand also that people will want to give me advice, but in the original post, all the replies were regarding the cycle of my tank and that its not possible, and also people giving me the same advice again after someone had already given it and I had responded. I felt like being treated as a thicko and the more experienced users are pummeling it into me as if telling me once isn't enough :(.

I do not post expecting a single answer, as I am new to this and all advice is greatly welcomed.

Once again, apologies for incorrect use of "flaming" and to any who I may have offended

No problems, Adam. You bring up a really valid point here. IMO, this gets to the heart of our problems here at TFF.... Basically, we have 4 kinds of members:

1. Well meaning, knowledgable fishkeepers trying to give good advice.
2. Well meaning, but not knowledgable fishkeepers trying to give good advice, but actually giving bad advice.
3. Well meaning newbies who make mistakes, but are willing to learn and take good advice.
4. Not so well meaning newbies who don't care what people actually say unless it's what they want to hear.

As you may guess, this is a recipe for situations that really suck (like you getting ganged up on unnecessarily, even with good advice). Group 1 folks feel like they have to shout over Group 2, or at least post enough times to overwhelm the bad advice. Meanwhile, they're frustrated by a recent large influx of Group 4 people who have made things pretty miserable by not listening, even in the face of overwhelming information. And in walk Group 3 folks like yourself who get overwhelmed by a social dynamic they totally weren't expecting. Basically, 2 and 4 create an atmosphere where 1 and 3 can't effectively communicate with one another.

It's an uphill battle everyday. But I hope everyone can take a few deep breaths every time they post and make sure that the message they're sending to a well-meaning newbie isn't tied up in their last message in a more frustrating thread. And hopefully newbies can try not to read as much anger into what might just be a poorly worded but well meaning post.

Yes, it can really suck at times dealing with the losers... but trust me, this place has a greater number of people from Group 1 than just about anywhere else out there, and some really fantastic Group 3 folks too. Once you get past the garbage (you're going to find that in any internet forum), this really is a great community.

Thanks for joining and Welcome to TFF!

Thanks for your reply MH.

Its people like you that make forums and the world a more civlised place to be. It wouldn't hurt for everyone to take a page from the book belonging to someone like yourself.

Clear, concise, knowledgable and civilised answers....lets all take note.

Thanks MH

Adam :)
