hi all...

my boyfriend's dad has just bought a new tank its approx 220l, he was planning on going with discus but after some advice from here, because our waters so hard, i think we're going to rethink...

i've got a mix of tanks of tanks myself including community and lake tang...but i was hoping you might be able to give me some different ideas to pass on...

as already said, tank is approx 220l and its a corner tank... i was thinking lake malawi would be good but would they be okay with a corner tank??

any ideas would be great and stocking suggestions/amounts would be really apreciated!!

Thanks

Hels

Sounds like a nice tank for Malawi, but because of the lack of lengh in these corner units the tank should be considered smaller then it is when considering species of fish. For example, in a 220l tank I would not house any fish that would require more then 150l of volume of a rectangular tank. This means he should avoid the more aggressive varieties and stick to the milder, and be careful with what he mixes. Of course there are way too many types to just start naming fish and so much depends on availability and personal taste. I would suggest that he put a list together of all the Malawi's he likes or can find locally by doing some net research (or you do it for him) and visiting the LFS, and then we can look for what would be suitable and compatible out of them.

okay...

the thinking is...so far...

3 groups of fish

Melanochromis Johannii
Labidochromis Caeruleus
...and i'm not sure about the 3rd one??

could anyone suggest the 3rd type...and give some info on the approperiate amounts/ratios of male/female please!!

Thank you!

Hels

The Johanni are best kept with 3 or more females to the males. Yellow Labs are grouping fish and get along fine in whatever ratio you end up with, though it's preferable to have a higher number of females to discourage back to back breeding with existing ones. Another fish that can add a nice new element to the tank are Pseudotropheus Acei - another type with which gender isn't very important, and as close to a shoaling fish as Malawis get.
