this is mainly a post on behalf of my dad, who is starting up his newest tank. He has about 10 years of fish keeping experience, mainly with tetra, corry and guppies, but would this time like to really make the tank look spectacular.
The measurements are as follows: 36" length, 18" height and 15" width.
So far he has fine black gravel, and is going to put a wall of volcanic rocks to create caves, hiding places, etc. He also wants to plant it up nicely so that there'll be more coverage and more colour.
We'll be using mature filter media to get the tank going. He's picked his filter, but I'm not sure what brand it is.
We have a general idea of what he would like, (from the South American region, tetra, etc.), and I was wondering if anyone on here could give some good suggestions? So far he's thinking of the usual neon tetra, and he also likes the look of the ember tetra that I have in my tank. What he is looking for are small fish species with bright colours that he can keep in big shoals relative to the tank size.
As for bottom dwellers, we are thinking of some kind of loach, but don't want anything that will grow to a giant size
He also would like ghost and cherry shrimp, and is also thinking of lowering the water level to just bellow the top of the rocks, and have either crabs or frogs or newts. I'm thinking that volcanic rock will be too rough for newts or frogs? If so, would a small species of crab be ok?
