hi,
my new tank arrived yesterday...vision 180.I know i have awhile before getting any fish, but was wondering what fish to get, while my tank is cycling.
Not sure if to go for small fish...cardinals,guppies,tetras etc,or bigger fish.Totally new to fishkeeping,i would like a tank where there is no bullying.
Could anyone suggest a perfect small fish set up......also a bigger fish set up.Also how many fish the tank would hold, comfortably.

Would be very grateful for any advice.

O I have recently fallen in love with mollys, platys, swordtails (all live bearing fish like guppies, only bigger). You could house some semi agressive fish too but most times these have to be kept in groups of 6 or more (which isn't a problem in your tank). Just when your looking, make sure that the adult size of the fish isn't too big for your tank. I made that mistake with some bala sharks and red finned sharks (these grow pretty big and will outgrow my tank in a while). You can look at my signature below to see what I have in my 180L. Note that the tiger barbs do tend to be fin nippers but the number I have in the tank seems to work very well as they dont bother any of the other long finned fish as they just pester each other instead. They are buggers to feed....haha...like pirahanas!! :)

If you fall in love with one fish, research it as much as you can and you will learn what other fish are suitable for them to live with.

You say you got a tank yesterday, your best bet is to do a fishless cycle on the tank to get it ready for real fish, its where you add in ammonia yourself. (just check out the numerous posts on cycling and you'll get the idea!!). I recommend fishless cycling because no fish are harmed during the process, the bacteria that grow are in high numbers and you can add alot of fish in one go after the tank is fully cycled. The best part of fishless cycling is that it is much quicker than using fish to supply the ammonia to the filters...so you can get your fav. fish much quicker!!

If you can get a local pet store to give you some bacterial medium from filters in established tanks this will speed up the cycling process.

Welcome :hi: to the addictive world of fish. I think I would probably go and look at all the photos of tanks and see what sort of fish i liked - then i would ask questions and read up about them.

Remember to look and see if there is anyone in your area willing to donate filter media to newbies - this would greatly hasten your cycle :good:

I also have a jewel 180 - they are great tanks - i would however invest in some light deflectors (they are not expensive) which really help.

Think very carefully about the sort of substrate you are going to use - I have black gravel but really wish i had gone for sand (not brave enough to change it yet)

anyway, good luck and dont be afraid to ask loads of questions - everyone is lovely on here
