Apart from cyps are there any tangs that will occupy the top half of the tank. It seems to be an area of void no mans land.

I guess although i like to keep it pure Tang if it means getting a bit of colour i could stretch to a peaceful alternative but only as the last resort

Any ideas.

Most fish swim around the reef rather than up near the surface out in the open. If they are near the surface (in the open) they are more susceptible to being taken by predators.
When the fish have settled in they will swim around different parts of the tank.

I just have cyprichromis leptosoma which are excellent free swimmers.

Main options are really cyps, theres other types such as nigripinnis etc

As Colin said though, most hang around the bottom/middle areas to avoid being eaten lol. From experience, i do find Brichardi to be a particularly 'keen' fish and quite daring once it's settled, my 2 will often swim together with the leps.

woops, sorry, I thought we were talking about marine surgeon fish, aka tangs (not Tanganyikans) I feel like a real prat. I should read the heading and area we are in :)
However, the info is still correct for fresh and salt water fishes.

If you want some mid to surface dwelling fish and you don't mind them not being Tanganyikan, possibly look at rainbowfish in the Family Melanotaeniidae. They will be fine in hard alkaline water and are peaceful enough to leave the other fishes alone, but big enough to not get bullied by most smaller cichlids.
