Hello all.

I'm beginning to think about setting up a small tank for my home office, which would be an 18" cube, along with a 20" sump.

The filtration will be mostly berlin method, and so I will be looking for a decent skimmer. I have a couple of specific requirements though, and wondered if anyone can offer their own experiences.

Firstly, the skimmer needs to be absolutely silent. If this isn't possible, it needs to be as silent as possible. I'm not sure if this will affect the reccommendations, as I have a feeling thatt an air stone based skimmer may be quieter than a venturi based system. If it is, I will need to get the air stone version, even if it is not as good.

Secondly, it will need some mechanism for taking Ozone into the air stream that creates the bubbles.

As this will make the skimming, or rather the overall reduction in waste matter, far more efficient accross the system, it could be that I need a smaller skimmer for the same volume. However, I'm not sure how effecient ozone is, compared to not having ozone at all. therefore, I'm not sure how much smaller the skimmer could be?

The third and last requirement is that in needs to be as short as possible.

If anyone can be of any help, please let me know.

Many thanks

Steve

Well the easy answer for a tank that small is that neither skimming or ozone is required. Just a good strict water change regime is all that is needed.

I'd prefer a skimmer if at all possible, purely becuase with sump, plumbing and tank I will be looking at about 50-odd gallons.

Is there nothing available that is quiet?

Thanks

Steve

Well, I just noticed that ASM is coming out with or has come out with a "mini" model which might be suitable for your tank. I'd research it some more and see if you can even get one in your area as I just saw it for sale today but might work out for you :)

Well unfortunately sound is more of a perspective. A skimmer may be quiet in some instances but not in others. It has been my experience that a skimmer makes less noise than an overflow so if you have a sump setup I'd say any quality skimmer would work. I have personally only ever used coralife models and they are quiet from my perspective.

thanks for the feedback guys.

I've just seen the V2 400 skimmer by TMC which seems to be pretty small.

Has anyone seen these or heard good things about them?

Thanks
Steve
